Squalus is a free-lance consultancy based in Hamburg, Germany, specialised in conservation and scientific research on sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras (cartilaginous fishes). The firm was founded by Heike Zidowitz, a marine biologist with a long standing interest in these fascinating, but often threatened marine creatures.

She served as Shark Alliance coordinator for Germany and is Chair of the Board of the German Elasmobranch Society (D.E.G.), a member to the Board of Directors of the European Elasmobranch Association (EEA), and Regional Vice Chair of the IUCN Shark Specialist Group for the Northeast Atlantic.

Heike Zidowitz has working experience in international conservation campaigns and has worked in German marine scientific institutions such as the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven and the Center of Natural History of the University of Hamburg.

She has authored and co-authored several scientific, conservation and popular scientific publications and conducted international scientific conferences on cartilaginous fishes.
